St. Kitts and Nevis celebrated National Hero’s Day on 16th September by Honoring the Icons who contributed to the formation of the twin-island federation. The Prime Minister, Terrance Drew, announced the names of recipients of Companion of the Star of Merit and the Medal of Honour, appreciating their dedication and loyalty to reforming the nation.
While addressing the 26th National Heroes Day celebrations, The PM said, “islanders can learn a lot from the country’s five national icons. Over the past year, we have faced challenges that tested our resolve. Yet we have emerged stronger, more together, and more determined to continue the work that our heroes began,”.
While remembering the father of Independence, the PM said, “Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, our first national hero whose leadership paved the way for Independence, remains a source of inspiration not only for us here in St Kitts and Nevis but through the region and indeed the world. His legacy reminds us that true leadership is measured not by the ease of the journey but by the impact it has on the lives of others.”
The awards were presented to Konard Kelly, David Huggins, and Desmond Hobson Tyson Sr. for agriculture, business entrepreneurship, community service, and activism. In addition, Roslyn Hazelle, Rupert Herbert, Hanzel Manners, Orville’ Sailor’ Thompson, and Oliver Spencer were awarded for women’s empowerment, education and public service, banking and community development, sports, and the fishing industry, respectively. Edrice Lewis-Viechweg and Elsie Liburd-Brandy were awarded for education. Pearletta Lanns has also been awarded for legal and judicial services.
Five individuals are also awarded for their meritorious service to the nation. In the fields of law enforcement, broadcasting, early childhood education and community activism, pioneering business, and nursing, Allison Rouse, Jasmin’ Jazzy D’Clarke-Thomas, Orvis Mills, Patricia Richards-Leader, and Viola Manning were honored, respectively, with medals.
The Prime Minister praised the farmers, teachers, and other business owners for their selfless contribution towards the island. These unsung heroes contributing to the nation’s economy are the driving force behind development. Mr. Terrance Drew encouraged the island’s people to serve the island selflessly and follow the path of the national heroes who were the vital force behind the formation of the twin-island federation. The combined force of people will elevate the nation to new heights.
