The nation is celebrating its 41 years of independence, and its celebration events have already begun and will last until 27 October 2024. Due to these two months of entertainment and patriotism amongst the people, this year’s Independence Day theme will be “Together, A People, Proud and Strong: Independence 41.”
The celebration event includes National Colours Days. Throughout this period, citizens and residents were encouraged to wear the national colors: green, yellow, red, white, and black. The simple yet powerful gesture will highlight the nation’s collective pride and identity. Prime Minister Terrance Drew mentioned the significance of the heroes’ contributions by saying, “Our national heroes have led us to the way for the freedom that we enjoy today. As we celebrate our 41st year of independence, we must remember them and honor their legacy. Their sacrifices remind us of the strength that defines and builds our nation.”
Moreover, Viera Galloway, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office and Co-Chair of the Organising Committee, highlighted the importance of community involvement. Another highlight of the Independence Calendar activities will be the Caribbean Premier League, a T/20 Tournament. Warner Park is all set to host many important matches as part of the St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots. These matches will be on 31 August, followed by 1 September, 4 September, 6 September and the last match on 8 September. However, these celebrations show the people’s unity and pride in standing together as a nation.
The events will begin with the Seniors Independence Cultural Celebration on September 3, showcasing the rich cultural heritage. On September 7, the Creative Power, Gala, and Awards Show will highlight the artistic talents of local creators. Moreover, the Nevis Marathon and Running Festival will offer competitive and recreational events for enthusiasts.
Additionally, the St. Kitts and Nevis Diaspora Conference, which will be held from September 14 to 21, will assemble nationals and friends from abroad to focus on and discuss opportunities for the country. On the same day, local cooking talent will be enjoyed during the King of Kings Calypso Extravaganza and Men in Aprons, respectively.
Activities and events involve every section of society in these Independence Day celebrations. The events include National Colours Days, where members of the public will wear their national colors between specific dates. Additionally, the National Colours Days will happen on the 30th of August, which will be green; the 6th of September, yellow; the 13th of September, white; the 20th of September, black; and the 27th of September, when the people must be dressed in red.
Dr. Marcus L. Natta, Cabinet Secretary and Co-Chair of the Independence 41 Organising Committee, said the events are being organized enthusiastically. “We are excited to bring together our community as we celebrate our independence. The events have been carefully planned to ensure everyone can enjoy the joy and pride of being a part of St Kitts and Nevis. We anticipate a series of memorable and inclusive events,” he said.
