St. Kitts and Nevis come alive with music, dance, and folk tales for the upcoming National Folklore Galore Competition.

St. Kitts and Nevis will organize the National Folklore Galore Competition on 18 December 2024. It will be held at the destination of ‘The Circus.’ Various characters from this famous event were seen practicing on the streets of Downtown Basseterre, St. Kitts, and Nevis. Various entertainment forms, such as music, dance, and folk tales, were seen on the ground. This competition also showcases the National Folk Tale of St. Kitts and Nevis by showing different important characters.

Folk tales in Saint Kitts and Nevis are not just a form of entertainment but also a medium of education. It educates younger generations about the country’s history, values, and identity. Festivals like Sugar Mas and Culturama give a platform for these stories so they can be shared widely with the world. These folk tales also ensure that the traditions of the country have a space even in modern society.

The Moko Jumbies are the most important characters in local folklore and celebrations. They are believed to have originated from West African traditions and are seen during Carnival, known locally as Sugar Mas. Moko Jumbies are known as the symbol of protection and are associated with storytelling through their performances.

The Anansi Stories are another important character of Anansi that originated from West African folklore and are also popular in St. Kitts and Nevis. These tales talk about moral lessons through humorous or clever plots involving Anansi’s antics. Another important character is the Legend of the Devil’s Bridge, which has supernatural elements, where the bridge is said to be haunted by spirits. It shows a story about respect for nature and the loss that is brought by being greedy.

The Culturama Festival is also celebrated in Nevis, and it includes performances that provide a vision of traditional folk tales through music, dance, and drama. It talks about the importance of protecting local culture and connecting with the history of the country.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has a rich tradition of folklore that focuses on the cultural heritage. The national folk tales often come from the island’s history, that is, the combination of African, European, and indigenous influences.

Clowns are also another important character of the folk culture in St. Kitts and Nevis, especially during Carnival. They perform in various colorful costumes and masks. Also, they show European characters while involving the audience through dance and music.

St. Kitts and Nevis is all set to celebrate this amazing festival. Various social media platforms have made posts and reels regarding this festival. It is expected that there will be grand participation in the upcoming folklore competition.
