Roseau, Dominica: Dominica’s National Swimmer Jasmine Schofield set a personal best and new national record in the women’s 50m freestyle at the ongoing 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games on Saturday.
She finished in 3rd place in her meet this morning and swam a personal best of 29.91 seconds. Her previous personal best was 30.26 seconds. She is the first female swimmer to represent Dominica since 2000, when her mother Francilia Agar swam at the 2000 Sydney Games.
National Swimmer Jasmine Schofield and her mom expressed proud of her experience and stated that the experience was great.
She said,”I think I have performed best to my ability, I mean we got a new national record, new personal best, I am happy.” Her mother added that she is proud of her daughter and Dominica as she has done a lot of work, just seeing her wake up early at three in the morning months after months, weeks after week, so there was lot of hard work.
Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit extended greetings to Schofield and shared story on Facebook for her success.
Notably, fourth athletes have represented Dominica at Paris Olympics 2024 including two girls and two boys. Earlier, Thea Lafond advanced to the finals of the Triple Jump on Friday and aimed at the medal in the games.
The finals for the Triple Jump will be held today at Paris Olympics 2024 at 2: 20 pm with Dominica time. Dominica was represented by Warren Lawrence in men’s 50m freestyle event and failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Olympic Games.
800-metre runner Dennick Luke will contest the game on August 7, 2024 who is the last athlete of the country in the games.
With the victory, Thea Lafond will become the first athlete to win the medal in the Olympic Games for Dominica. Earlier, Lafond and Luke were the flag bearers for the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics Games.
