The Kalinago Week Events are ready to kick off for the people of Dominica this September 2024. The Kalinga Council has announced the list of events from the 15th to the 22nd of September 2024. The theme for this event is “Unity In Diversity, Embracing Kalinga Culture.”
The Kalinago Week Events unite Dominica communities to celebrate Kalinago traditions. This event features cultural performances, food displays, art exhibitions, and community activities throughout the week.
Starting with the first event, on 15th September 2024, the Akatison Catholic church will honor the Kalinga elders. A craft and expo will be featured following the later event at Soutomah Park, Gullette River, starting at 10 am. This event offers a dive deep into the traditional arts and crafts of the Kalinago people.
On Tuesday, 17th September, the council will host a full moon smoke and a naming ceremony for Kalinago. In addition to that, the day will end with a traditional dinner at 7 pm at Barana Autê. This event is for all those who want to understand more about the spirituality and long-lasting traditions of the Kalinago people.
The Kalinago council will host Kalinago Heritage Language and History Day on 18th September around 10 am. Schools and educational institutions can participate in this event. This event is a great opportunity for students to learn about the Kalinago’s long-standing history and linguistic traditions.
National Kalinago Dress Day will be hosted on 19th September. The community and people of this small region are encouraged to wear a Kalinago-inspired dress. A Smoke ceremony will take place at 10 am at the St. Cyr Memorial Site. To engage the young generation, the council has prepared many Kalinago-themed school activities.
The next day, 21st September, will be followed by Kalinagos’ Got Talent Performing Arts in the evening at around 8 pm at the Karina Culture Village in Bataca. This event showcases the talent of the Kalinago people and celebrates their music and dance. On the last of the week, on 22nd September, the council will host a Sports Day at Soutomah Park, Gulette River.
The Flavours of the World Festival will be hosted on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Forecourt, Windsor Park Sports Stadium, celebrating global cuisine and culture. The event supports renovating the historic Roseau Cathedral, a significant part of cultural heritage and tourism. This one-day event features entertainment, food, and music by artists such as Marie Pascal, Natacha Ruffe, Triple Kay, Li Li Octave, De Hunter, and Extasy Band from various countries.
The Flavours of the World Festival will feature diverse acts, including Kalinago dancers, Jinping dancers, Soca and Boyon artists, and performances from Africa, India, Venezuela, Haiti, and Martinique.
