Jewel Andrew, a 17-year-old cricketer from Antigua and Barbuda, has recently marked his position in the West Indies Senior Men’s ODI Team. The West Indies Men’s team will play against Sri Lanka for the upcoming One Day International (ODI) series and T20I series. The series is scheduled from October 13 to October 27 in Sri Lanka.
The cricketer has recently played for Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the Caribbean Premier League and made heads turn with his wicketkeeping and batting skills. Currently, he is playing in the Leeward Islands Cricket Board 50 Overs Tournament. His consistent performance added a remarkable turning point in his career as he joined the CWI senior men’s cricket team. The Cricket West Indies is hoping for his brilliance in future games.
The Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association congratulated Jewel Andrew, saying, “Congratulations to our very own Jewel Andrew, the young Antiguan and Barbudan wicketkeeper-batsman, for making it into the Cricket West Indies One Day International (ODI) squad, set to face Sri Lanka in a three-match series from 20 to 27 October 2024.” the Cricket Board of Antigua and Barbuda expecting more young players will get inspired from Andrew.
The list of players in ODI squad has been released by Cricket West Indies. Batters like Jewel Andrew, Alick Athanaze, and Keacy Carty will be playing in the team. The squad will be led by Captain Shai Hope and Vice-captain Alzarri Joseph. The team believes that this series will give an opportunity to build the squad while keeping an eye on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
Daren Sammy, the Head Coach of the West Indies Cricket team remarked, “As we continue to build our ODI team, this tour offers a valuable opportunity to evaluate strategies and give opportunities to emerging talent. We are excited to see young players like Jewel Andrew, who has earned his place as an exciting prospect for the future.”
Alongside the ODI squad announcement, the Cricket West Indies (CWI) has also announced the T20I squad for the Sri Lanka tour. The most awaited West Indies Senior Men’s T20 International (T20I) is scheduled from October 13 to October 17. Roman Powell and Roston Chase will command the T20 squad as captain and vice-captain. Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran, Akeal Hosein, and Shiomron Hetmyer will not be seen playing in the T20I. However, Evin Lewis and Brandon King will be playing in the T20 series against Sri Lanka.
As of June 2023, West Indies has collected 417 victories and played a total of 865 ODIs. Sri Lanka and West Indies have faced each other in 65 ODI games, out of which 31 times, West Indies came out victorious. Sri Lanka has also won 31 matches, whereas 3 matches ended without any result. In the T20I format, under Daren Sammy’s captaincy, West Indies has won the World T20 twice and the Champions Trophy once.
