Jamaica: A fatal motorcycle accident claimed the life of a man on Tuesday, August 5, which took place on the New Market main road in Northern St. Elizabeth. The deceased has been identified as a 58-year-old Marlon Johnson, who was a resident of Bethel Town district in Westmoreland.
Details of the incident
According to a police report, the said incident occurred at around noon, when Johnson was riding a purple Missile motorcycle out on the New Market main road as he headed towards Bethel Town. He lost control of the bike and rammed into a Ford Ranger pickup truck parked by the side of the road.
He sustained severe injuries caused by the large impact of the collision. Emergency services were called to the accident scene, and he was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Johnson passed away due to his injuries.
The crash has been described as fatal by the police authorities, caused by over speeding, and investigations into the accident are currently ongoing.
Increase in road fatalities as of August 2025
Meanwhile, statistics from police authorities show that road deaths in Jamaica are still a large issue. As of Wednesday, July 6, 2025, a total of 234 people have lost their lives in road accidents. This is a slight increase when compared to the same period in 2024, which recorded 233 road deaths.
Motorists are being continuously advised to stay cautious on the roads, especially when it comes to speed and attentiveness, in an effort to reduce the number of preventable fatalities.
