Jamaica: The Island Traffic Authority of Jamaica has recently shared the latest monthly crash statistics on Friday. According to the reports 32 people were killed in 27 fatal crashes within the month of April.
The ITA of Jamaica has reported nearly 119 registered cases of road fatalities in Jamaica as of April 2025, which represents a decrease in the stats compared to April of the previous year by 14% (20 lives).
In comparison, road fatalities in 2024 decreased by 9%, while fatal crashes in April 2024 were down by 13%.
As per the ITA, during the month of April 11 pedestrians were killed in crashes, covering for 34% of the fatality stats and comparing it to the record of April 2024 the fatalities for pedestrians in crashes have increased by the mark of 22% increase.
In addition to pedestrian deaths, 8 motorcyclists were killed in April, marking a 20% decrease from the 10 motorcyclist deaths recorded in April 2024, according to the ITA.
Apart from these records the the fatality rate among elderly persons has increased by 133% compared to last year.
It is also reported by the ITA that vulnerable road users including pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motor cyclists and pillion passengers together reported for 72% fatalities during the month of April 2025. Overall, passengers accounted for 16% of road deaths in the month under the review.
The parish area of St. Catherine has recorded the highest number of deaths in April, with 6 fatalities.
Following the deaths of St. Catherine’s, St Mary was reported with 5, Clarendon with 4, Westmoreland with 3 and St. James with 3.
As per the reports, no road death was recorded in Manchester and Hanover last month making them the safest areas for road users.
Being an active issue the ITA has emphasized the importance of continued road safety practices to reduce the road fatalities in the future. and continues to promote safe road use practices, importance of driver alertness, responsible driving and for walking as well as driving safely.
