Through a partnership between the Ministry of Education and Youth, Jamaica and Profit Jumpstarter Academy a scholarship program valued at $31 million will be awarded to 200 teachers to provide them with financial education training.
This scholarship is specifically designed to impart financial literacy among the teachers. After gaining knowledge, they can provide it to their students and help society at large, which would lead to the overall development of the country.
To equip the citizens with knowledge to build wealth, the financial training provided to the teachers will act as the first step and will prove beneficial for the national development, stated Fayval Williams, Portfolio Minister.
The Education Minister said, Educators play a crucial role in shaping the generation that will lead in future, this opportunity will unlock professional growth and financial security among the teachers and will make them enriched with ways to manage their financial resources in an effective manner.
She further noted that if the country invests in financial education of teachers that means they are investing in the sustainability and advancement of the education system.
Minister Williams, while addressing the ‘Build Wealth Conference 2024’ last week at the AC Marriott Hotel in Kingston, highlighted the importance of developing financial skills early in life. She further stated that this knowledge at a young age will liberate young minds to make smart decisions related to finance.
It will also enhance awareness among them to avoid debt traps and build a future that is financially stable for them as well as the country.
She further added, financial literacy will open doors to several opportunities for our students and will further enable them to pursue higher education, start ventures, businesses and secure their financial independence.
The Minister of Education pledged that she is committed to incorporating financial literacy education into the school curriculum so that every student gets a chance to learn and develop these critical skills.
Additionally, emphasizing this partnership with the Education Ministry, Keisha Bailey, Chief Executive Officer of Profit Jumpstarter Academy, tagged this partnership as a strategic step in incorporating a critical aspect of the education curriculum.
She further added that under this scholarship the educators will be able to learn ways to build wealth so that they can further pass on this knowledge to the students. Moreover, the students will discuss it with the parents, and this will make a learning chain, which would help build a better Jamaica and improve the financial landscape of the country.
