Grenada’s former Education Minister Andy Williams recently, in a press conference, addressed the housing needs of teachers both on the mainland and in Carriacou. The government also aims to ensure that teachers are provided with decent places of work.
Former Minister of Education Andy Williams mentioned that the government and administration are doing everything to help ease the burden on the teachers. He shed some light on the role teachers have in the young generation of the nation.
He stated, “At the end of the day, they are teaching our students and children. When you have teachers coming and going back to their houses with bad living conditions, it can severely affect their teaching performance.”
Minister Williams also mentioned that the union and government want to ensure that the teachers receive the necessary care and support.
These attempts are to create or form a better environment for students to learn by giving teachers more stable housing. as if the teachers are relaxed and without worrying about finding a place to live. It will bring great relief to them. The housing problem can deeply affect teachers’ experience and overall mental health. But if this plan gets into action, it will lead to higher job satisfaction and higher levels of motivation.
Furthermore, when teachers feel secure and stable, they are more inclined to invest in their communities and participate actively in local development projects. The government of Grenada is also working on many construction projects to deal with the housing shortage issue in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
The housing shortage problems arose after the passing of Hurricane Beryl. This initiative is to provide the residents with houses that have nowhere to go after losing their homes. The government has allocated funds to construct over 50 new homes across the sister islands.
Currently, in the Dumfries area of Carriacou Nine, the government is constructing new hurricane-resistant houses. As reported, it was noticed that the foundation work has been completed, and three contractors have been assigned to manage the works. “Build Back Better is the project that is dealing with These houses and is looking forward to building 50 decent and modern houses by December.
The design of the new houses will include two bedrooms, a bathroom, a sitting room, a kitchen, an extra room and a water tank. Apart from this, the house will also feature a parapet and flat with a water harvesting system, concrete molding, proper ventilation, and installation of solar energy. The residents of the islands are looking forward to the completion of the work.
