Guyana: A 40-year-old woman identified as Elizebath Chung, resident of Albertown and Alexander village was arrested on November 22, by the officials at the Bina Hill Police Checkpoint in Region 9 for illegally importing 10 dogs.
Accused Chung appeared at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where she was charged with importing a Terrestrial Animal without any legal Permit, which is a violation of Section 22(1) and Section 40(1)(a) of the Animal Health Act No. 7 of 2011.
Officials also released a statement on Monday, in which they mentioned Chung, also known as Liza, is a professional chef who was found guilty before the Magistrate, Omadatt Chandan and was ordered to pay a fine of G$20,000 (Guyanese dollar).
According to police reports, the officials at the Bina Hill Police Checkpoint in Region 9 were checking every passing vehicle for safety purposes, when Elizebath Chung’s vehicle came in the queue.
Upon checking her vehicle officers discovered she was importing ten dogs following which officers demanded a necessary permit from her for importation which she was not able to produce. After that the officer arrested her at the scene and kept her in remand till November 24.
Authorities stated that these cases underscores the importance of adhering to animal importation regulations to ensure health and safety. Additionally they also stated “officers of our country always put their lives first and try everything possible to control all the illegal activities and will do that in future too.”
