A double homicide has been reported in Belmopan, the capital city of Belize. The incident occurred on Friday evening, 13 February, around 6 p.m., near St Ann’s Anglican Church.
Police arrived at the scene shortly after, around 6:15 p.m., while reporters reached the area approximately two hours later. Authorities have not yet released official information regarding the suspects or the circumstances of the incident.
According to initial reporting, the victims were walking near the Central Walkway area, located between St Ann’s Anglican Church and less than 200–300 feet from the Belmopan City Council and Brodies. Investigations are ongoing as police work to determine the cause of the killings and identify those responsible.
Notably, where four to five men were hidden and waiting in the dark around the bushes. Then they ambushed the victims with multiple shots. Also the motive behind the shooting of the victims by the group is still unidentified.
Oscar Mira, the Minister of Home Affairs also area representative, according to him the dark skinned two victims appear to be in their twenties identified as Calvert Webster and Zamar Alvarez. But he is not sure about if they have been from Belmopan or not.
The police also found surveillance cameras near the crime area. They believe the cameras may have captured something important, so they have taken it for the investigation to find out what actually happened on the evening of 13 February.
The incident also shocked the locals because the crime hit very close to the central area of the capital where many government agencies are near, the Department of Transport is right down the street, the Belmopan Market square, preschool Brodie’s, and there is also a kids park a far from the crime area.
Additionally, Belize city experienced one more late- night shooting crime that happened at Cleghorn Street on the same night of 13 February. In which a security guard got injured.
Around 9:45 pm police officers responded to a call of shots fired in Cleghorn Street. When police reached the area they found Justo Pineda, a 49 years old security guard wounded from the gunshot.
Police officials later shifted Justo Pineda to the Karl Memorial Hospital, also in a chase police officer captured the two main suspects. In the investigation officers found they both are minors one is 17 and second one 16 years old.
Also both the minors are still in custody. Police started the incident investigation into firearms theft and attempted to murder.
