Roseau, Dominica: Annette Sanford became the first female Kalinago Chief in Dominica after winning the elections. She received over 693 votes in the preliminary results of the elections held on Monday.
The final count and declaration of the proper results will be held on Tuesday as the preliminary count showcased the trends in the favour of Sanford. With the result, she defeated six other candidates who contested the elections.
Anette Sanford belongs to Sineku community and worked as a clinical instructor. She contested the election through the symbol of the Flag. With the victory, she will replace Lorenzo Sanford who decided not to fill the nomination for re-elections.
The polling was started at 7: 00 am in the morning and kept open till the 5: 00 pm in the afternoon in the different polling stations including: House of Rapheal Auguiste, Mission House- Church of Nazarene, Tunubuku Library, Salybia Primary School, Pilgrim Holiness Church, an Christian Union Church.
The candidates for the Kalinago Chief Elections included Kenrick Dana Auguiste from St Cry who contested the elections through the symbol of Tree. He is the tour guide by professsion.
The second candidate was Veronica Ideline Burton who belongs to Bataca and worked as the Insurance Broker. The election symbole for the candidate was Car.
The third candidate Wilbert Devon Cuffy fought the election through Teacup symbol. Cuffy belongs to Bataca and the worked as the Technical Officer. Casius Darroux was the fourth candidate from St Cyre and worked the Linesman. Darroux fought the election under the Ship Symbol.
The fifth candidate in the election was Jumadine Faustines-Frederick who belongs to Mahaut River and worked as Contractor. Frederick contested the elections through the symbol of Lantern.
The sixth candidate was Natasha Zandra Green who belongs to Salybia and worked as an entrepreneur. Her symbol was Bruch for the elections.
The Nominations for the election was held on July 2, 2024 at the Office of the Kalinago Council through the Returning officer Katheleee Auguiste Jno Lewis in Dominica. This year, the elections have created the history as for the first time, three females candidates have been nominated to contest the elections.
