The Caribbean Island nation Antigua and Barbuda has taken the lead to host the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The decision has been announced during the ongoing executive session of the 2024 CHOGM.
Notably, 2024 CHOGM is currently taking place in Apia, Samoa. It was inaugurated on October 21 and will continue till October 26, 2024.
Giving out the information, the government of Antigua and Barbuda noted that they will be hosting the 2026 CHOGM in the city of St. John’s. It is a moment of pride for the small island nation of Antigua and Barbuda to host the leaders of the Commonwealth.
Hosting this remarkable event will allow the administration of Antigua and Barbuda to showcase the unique culture, hospitality, infrastructure and vision to make a mark on the global stage.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne is elated to share this achievement with the people of his country. He shared that it would be an honour and privilege for the island nation to host the 2026 CHOGM.
Prime Minister further added, that this august gathering will allow the nation to demonstrate its deep commitment towards the shared values of the Commonwealth.
He stated that this would act as a chance for Antigua and Barbuda in fostering unity, collaboration, and sustainable progress across the Commonwealth community.
This selection as a host is a testament to the vision of the country’s leadership.
The country has already hosted high level meetings and the 28th CHOGM will be the fourth high-level international meeting that Antigua and Barbuda will be hosting within the span of two years.
The country hosted the fourth Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in May this year and in 2025 will host Caribbean Travel Marketplace in May and the General Assembly of the Organisation of American States in June.
It is to be noted that the ongoing meeting is the first CHOGM that is held in a Pacific Small Island Developing State.
