Toronto, Canada: A tragic mass shooting which took place last night on Tuesday in Lawrence Heights left one person dead and five others injured. Also, in response to the incident, a city-wide manhunt has been launched by the police who continue to search for the suspect involved.
According to the Toronto Police Service, multiple gunshots were reported around 8 p.m.in the Lawrence Heights residential area. First out to the scene were the police, fire and paramedic teams who found six victims who were suffering from gunshot wounds.
One male individual was pronounced dead on-site by the paramedics, while five others were brought to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The identity of the deceased has not been released by the authorities as of now.
Mayor Olivia Chow turned to social media to express her worry over the shooting. “Disturbed by news of the shootings in the Lawrence Heights area this evening,” Chow wrote. “My office is in contact with Toronto Police, who are on scene now and investigating, and the local councillor Deputy Mayor Mike Colle.”
She also extended her thanks to the emergency services, stating, “Thank you to Toronto Police, Fire and Paramedic Services for your work on a very busy and challenging scene.”
Police Investigation
The cause of the attack is still unknown. Police have not released any information about the suspect but confirmed that an active investigation is ongoing. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity.
This incident adds to a large-scale issue of increasing gun violence in the city with local residents calling for the authorities to put in more robust preventive and community safety measures. The Toronto Police are to give more reports as the investigation unfolds.
