BSVI: The British Virgin Islands Wreck Week, which will run from June 15 through June 21, 2025, has been recently announced. The event is held annually to commemorate the rich nautical history and lively underwater life of BSVI.
The event is being organized by BVI Scuba Organization and provides a mix of diving excursions, cultural activities, and conservation efforts, drawing professional divers and sea lovers alike.
In addition, the week is not only for diving; it also comprises beach bonfires, beach parties, live music, and lots more. The event serves as a great feat for some of the Caribbean’s best wreck diving destinations which gains spotlights from locals and tourists during the week.
About the Wreck Sites
The wreck of the week to see is the famous 19th-century Royal Mail Steamship Rhone wreck which is situated at the Salt Island. The Rhone was considered a wonder back in the day as it sailed with both steam and sail, and was meant to carry mail and passengers from England.
It was unfortunately destroyed during a hurricane in 1867, killing 123 in the process.
Moreover, unique art reefs can be found around the islands such as Shark Plane at Virgin Gorda, where three old planes have been crafted into half-shark, half-plane sculptures by Beyond The Reef crew.
The other interesting dive spot is the Kodiak Queen: a world war II Navy fuel barge with a dramatic 24-meter/79-foot kraken painted on its side. Moreover, divers will explore Wreck Alley which has four wrecks including the 2006 cargo shipwreck Island Seal.
Participants will also be able to dive the Chikuzen, a 74-meter/243-foot Korean refrigerator vessel that sank during a hurricane in 1981. Though the owners attempted to hide it by burning, they horrifically failed.
