St. Kitts Electricity Company Ltd. (SKELEC) has been assigned a 6-megawatt (MW) power plant to promote renewable energy in the country and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. The plant’s commissioning will also allow SKELEC to look upon the important fixations on its generator fleet, including the 6MW Mirrlees Blackstone generator, the largest in the Federation.
The temporary power plant will begin functioning in 12 months. This has been one of the initiatives of the St. Kitts and Nevis government to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels and focus on progressing with renewable energy practices and projects.
The plant project will focus on meeting the island’s electrical infrastructure demand and work on the electrical issues faced by the locals. This project will further provide a stable and smooth supply of electricity to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Prime Minister Terrance Drew gave an important speech during the assignment of this 6MW project. He said, “We have determined, through careful analysis, that if we were to transition St. Kitts and Nevis to renewable energy, it would transform St. Kitts and Nevis in its totality. It will transform our fiscal situation because renewable energy would cost at least two-thirds less than it costs to generate from fossil fuel.”
Additionally, he also expressed that the project would build new and better jobs in the green energy space. It will decrease the cost of generation in St. Kitts and Nevis, and the cost of operations will also reduce.
PM Drew also showed his faith and said, “This project is a step towards ensuring a more stable and reliable energy supply for our citizens.”
Jonathan Kelly, Engineering Manager of SKELEC, expressed his confidence in this project and Prime Minister Drew for this amazing initiative. He also said, “This 6MW rental power plant is an important step in stabilizing our electrical supply while we conduct vital maintenance on our infrastructure.”
He thanked the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis for supporting SKELEC’s initiative and taking on this project. He also showed commitment to working for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. Though this long-term project has various things to look after, he will make sure that everything aligns well with their work and that there’s no delay in the project.
Former Prime Minister Denzil Llewellyn Douglas also updated their Facebook handle and talked about this project. He also said that he appreciates the government’s initiative to improve electricity in the country.
This initiative also got a lot of attention from netizens. They also showed their support to the government for working on the most important thing, ‘Electricity,’ and hoped for better output from this project.
It is expected that this project will improve the electrical faults in the country and be beneficial for the people in the long term.
