The Department of Agriculture took a great initiative by spreading the importance of Plantation on National Tree Planting Day, which was celebrated on August 31st, 2024. Various communities came together to do plantations and give a heads-up to this initiative across the city. This step was a significant part of the Federation’s 41st Anniversary of Independence celebrations.

Some of the popular groups, such as Keys Community Improvement Club and the Department of Environment, took this initiative seriously and worked hard to plant more trees along the seaside and island main road. Farmer Raymond Guishard, along with the environment department, ended the day on a good note by planting many trees in Lamberts Mountain, which further enhanced the place’s beauty.

The call of urgency taken by these groups deserves much appreciation. However, contributing to nature’s well-being is a fundamental duty of every citizen. Deforestation has caused various issues for human beings, such as soil erosion and high floods. According to the UN, the sea level is rising rapidly, and it is estimated that it will become even worse in the coming years.

Trees and plants are also important because they have a significant role in absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and releasing oxygen, which is necessary for all living beings. The need to look after nature carefully still remains a significant issue even today. Therefore, initiatives like tree plantation and many more programmes are a must for everyone.

The plantation initiative will look into various environmental problems, such as the protection of biodiversity, securing greenhouse gasses, and preventing soil erosion; apart from that, it will play a crucial role in safeguarding climate change. Dependency on Air Conditioners has already caused various environmental and health problems. The shade provided by trees will help combat the harmful gasses released by air conditioners. This will help people get fresh, natural, and cool air.

Climate change will have terrible consequences that will soon become humanity’s nightmare. Some potential problems that are being witnessed today consist of rising sea levels, extreme weather changes, a drop in healthy agriculture, and a decline in biodiversity. All these problems are connected with tree plantation. Therefore, they require a major address or else it will cause a significant loss to human beings.

Various programmes such as National Afforestation Programmes, Corporate Social Responsibility programmes, and International Reforestation Programmes are some of the International level projects which aim to promote tree plantation.
