Antigua and Barbuda: A new $2M watercraft has been procured by the government of Antigua and Barbuda with an intent to combat the issue of the smuggling. He shared glimpses on social media and the vessel is aimed at apprehending the criminals.
The vessel will also assist the government with circumnavigation and combat the criminals who are smuggling contraband through the bays and quays. PM Browne noted that the vessel will enhance the efficiency of the security teams and maintain peace in the country.
Prime Minister Browne also announced that millions will be invested in their efforts to combat crime situations. The money will be allocated to different sectors so that the situation of the peaceful environment can be created.
He added that the government will make “several million dollars available immediately” to deal with a recent upsurge in violent crime in Antigua and Barbuda. After a 15-year-old was brutally murdered in the country and sent massive shock waves among the citizens.
Public demanded justice and tough punishment for the citizens as the crime situation has been rising in Antigua and Barbuda. In an address to the nation, the Prime Minister pledged his commitment to serve society and work for the prevention of crime in the twin island nation.
He said that the rising crime situation is a threat to the safety, security and peaceful environment of Antigua and Barbuda. So, measures will be taken to combat the situation and eradicate the crime cases in the country.
The millions of dollars will be allocated to different sectors including two vessels that will improve maritime surveillance of the porous maritime borders. It will facilitate the smuggling of contraband which will include arms and ammunitions.
The government will be acquiring ten additional surveillance drones to enhance law enforcement crime fighting capabilities and will be installing additional cameras on our streets, with superior technology to improve surveillance.
