Grenada: Olympic Champions who represented Grenada at Paris 2024 Summer Games have received grand welcome on Sunday when they arrived back home. Thousands of supporters and citizens gathered in unity at the Maurice Bishop International Airport to celebrate their athletic heroes.
Grenadians from all walks of participated in celebration event and honoured Olympic Champion for their accomplishments at the global stage. Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, Cabinet Ministers, members of Parliament, family members and other officials were presented at the celebration event and greeted the Olympians on their arrival at the airport.
The delegation of Grenada at 2024 Paris Olympics included Kirani James who participated in the men’s 400m, Lindon Victor participated in Decathlon and won first medal- Bronze for the country this year.
The third name was Anderson Peters who won bronze medal in Javelin Throw and turned out to be second medal holder for Grenada. Other participants included Tilly Collymore, Zachary Gresham, and Halle Hazzard.
During the celebration, Dr. Deborah-Ann Stephens John, who became Grenada’s first Olympic boxing official at the Paris Olympic Games, serving as ringside Dr Gerson Escobar, Swim Coach and Paul Phillip, Athletics Coach were honoured.
Awards to the athletes were presented by promising young athletes—Christopher Calliste, Analisa Brown and Joshem Sylvester.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell extended gratitude to them for their achievements and said that the occasion is great for Grenada as these athletes represented the small island state at the global level.
On Saturday, the Olympic Champions were greeted at the airport with dance, music and a gathering of citizens from across the country. In the proper display of fun and excitement, the young boys and girls gathered to showcase their skills and talents and honoured the champion with great treat.
The weekend’s activities also included a national motorcade on Sunday August 18, which begins at Morne Rouge and a recognition rally at the La Sagesse Playing field. The motorcade was begun at 9:00 AM, and worked its way westwards, passing through Gouyave, the hometown of Kirani James, and then down through the east coast including Soubise, the home village of Anderson Peters. It culminated at La Sagesse, in the home parish of decathlete Lindon Victor.
Packages to honor all the Olympians and not just the three finalists were unveiled in a special address by Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell.
