Guyana: Fire destroys home in Kwakwani, leaves nine homeless

Guyana: The two-story house was destroyed after catching fire in Kwakwani, Berbice River, yesterday evening. The reports reveal that the incident left nine people homeless.

According to the reports, the cause of the fire that has been reported states that the blaze, which was caused by an unattended electrical stove, led to this destruction. The flames spread from the curtains of the window to other flammable materials.

It is to be noted that the fire was reported at 6:10 PM to the Guyana Fire Service after which they reached the scene in five minutes with a water tender containing 1,703 liters of water.

As the team reached and started the efforts to extinguish the fire, they used one jet from the water tender and two additional jets from a garden light pump to control the flames.

Even though the fire services team tried, they could not save the building from getting destroyed.

The fire was reported at the fire at Lot 68, Second Phase Housing Scheme, Kwakwani, Berbice River. The home that got destroyed due to the flames is owned by 71-year-old Michael Primo. He was living there with his eight family members.

The family stated that it is fortunate that the fire caused no injuries to the family but took away the home of the nine individuals.

Further, the Guyana Fire Service has advised the public to be vigilant with the electrical appliances. Everyone who uses electrical appliances on a regular basis must ensure that they are turned off when someone is not around. Additionally, the appliances must be unplugged before leaving the room or building.

The officials also shared that people should avoid overloading electrical sockets, such as drop cords and power strips that have multiple appliances attached to them. Also, all the residents must make sure that the approved safety standards are met in homes as well as business units.

The authorities in Guyana further added that to save lives and properties from fire, one must install smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in homes and businesses.
