A magnitude of 5.0 earthquake struck northeast of St John’s, Antigua and Barbuda on Friday, 15th November, 2024. The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre said that the earthquake of 5.0 magnitude was recorded near Antigua at around 5:11 pm, local time.
As per the preliminary reports unveiled by the UW10 Seismic Research Centres, the earthquake’s epicenter was at latitude 17.61N and longitude 61.64W, with a depth of 15 kms.
The tremor was reportedly felt across Antigua and neighbouring islands, with the epicenter situated about 110kms northeast of Brades, Montserrat and 126 kms east-northeast of Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis. The intensity of earthquake was reported to be weak in these locations which didn’t create damages to these particular nations.
The UW10 Seismic Research Centres said that they have held a preliminary finding which was calculated using computer algorithms. These calculations are subjected to revisions and pending evaluation conducted by SRC analysts.
Following the earthquake, the authorities of Antigua and Barbuda and neighbouring islands have asked all the citizens to be aware. Since now, no reports of injuries or deaths have been reported by the authorities. However, they still have asked the citizens to be aware and follow all the preventive measures in order to avoid any kind of threat.
Also, the northeastern part of Antigua has recorded seven earthquakes in the month of September as well. This has become an alarming situation for the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda to pay attention to the situation and follow all precautionary measures.
Following the spread of news on social media accounts, the citizens took to their social media accounts and hoped for the betterment of nation and its netizens. One person wrote,” I really hope people are safe in Antigua and hoping for the conditions to get better.”
