Before the new school year began, festivities and gatherings were organized for the students in several constituencies of Dominica. Melissa Skerrit, Minister of Housing, hosted a Back to School event where students were invited to celebrate their new endeavors in the future. The Foundation contributed to the provision of additions to the school curriculum, mainly introducing technical and vocational subjects. Moreover, Skerrit-Poponne stated that educating our children is everyone’s success.
Since its establishment, the Melissa Skerrit Foundation has undertaken many initiatives addressing essential community needs. Key among these include the Single Mother’s Program, designed to provide financial and other forms of emotional support to single mothers so that they can take care of their families. The Elderly Program provides support and resources to senior citizens to ensure their comfort.
Hurricane Preparedness Program offers resources that help the community be safe in natural disasters. The Women’s Symposium is a creative way of empowering women to speak out, learn new skills, and generate sources of inspiration from each other. The People’s Republic of China, the Government of Dominica, members of the Dominica community, and other locals all sponsor the Melissa Skerrit Foundation.
Special recognition was also given to Milagro Deluge, an outstanding performer in the CXC Examination, and Kitara Beaupierre, an outstanding performer in the Grade Six National Assessment. Milagro Deluge thanked Poponne-Skerrit and the Foundation for their contribution to her success. She urged young people to be serious about their goals and to prioritize their education, mentioning that success results from hard work.
