Mahatma Gandhi is widely considered the father of modern India. To honor his legacy of nonviolence, the India Association of Greater Springfield held a celebration of his 149th birthday October 2nd. The event featured a number of speakers. Some of the speakers included Larry Golden, Founder President of the Illinois Innocence Project; Wesley McNeese MD, past associate dean at the SIU School of Medicine; and Proshanta Nandi, professor emeritus at UIS. They shared how Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence impacted their work and lives.

There was also a youth essay contest. Students read essays about the life and work of Gandhi. Samanvi Ganga won the youth contest.

After the speeches, there was a dinner for the 75 guests who came out the the India Religious and Cultural Center. You can watch all of the speeches in the player.
