The Springfield Elks Lodge #158 hosted the third annual Blessing of the Boats on Lake Springfield this afternoon. This event was put on with the CWLP and Illinois Department of Natural Resources Police, and the local Springfield Police to help encourage boating safety. Today’s events were part of the National Safe Boating Week. The U.S. Power Squadrons provided free vessel safety inspections. 40 boats took part in the parade and were blessed by Father Charlie Hart OFM in the nondenominational ceremony.

Blessing of the Boat ceremonies are not unique to Springfield, and have a long tradition in Mediterranean fishing communities. Although the city’s ceremony was nondenominational, the tradition is historically a Roman Catholic one.
