The Millie Ifill Fish Market, located at Weston, St. James, has reopened after almost a year and is all set to welcome its customers. It has been made better by having a state-of-the-art, disabled-friendly fish vending and processing facility. The famous market has grabbed the attention of internet users.
The fish market belongs to the well-known fish vendor, Millicent Ifill. It was upgraded under the Barbados Port Inc.’s (BPI) social responsibility program. An estimated cost of $2.7 million has been spent on its makeover and has improved its structure from before.
Its reopening was done by Chief Fisheries Officer Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox. Barbados Government Information Service took to its official Facebook handle, where it updated the internet users about the reopening ceremony. Dr. Shelly-Ann Cox expressed her views by saying, “The reopening ceremony is a significant milestone in the development of the fishing industry in Barbados.”
This upgrade project took place between the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport and the Ministry of The Environment, National Beautification, Green and Blue Economy. This project has also made a huge mark in Barbados’ fishing industry.
Barbados Port Inc. (BPI) shared some information regarding this project last year in the month of July. They said that the construction was peaceful and didn’t affect the natural environment while working to deliver this important project to the Weston community.
It was expected to be ready in about 12 months’ time by the contractors of Empire Building and Construction. Also, BPI made sure to provide the required funds wherever required by the project makers. Ms. Rianne Greaves, Greaves Designs, and Project Management Services were the main architects behind this upgrade project.
The new facility is expected to boast the central office of the market along with a public toilet with disabled provisions, a public shower, and separate fish retail and processing areas.
Netizens congratulated the entire project team of Millie Ifill Fish Market and looked forward to resuming their visit from the market like before.
