Foreign Mission Board of the National Baptist Convention USA has provided financial assistance to Carriacou Police Station. Carriacou Police Station repairs have been by the members of the Guyana Defence Force, and the restoration work is almost completed.
The police station was among the many government facilities in the island that suffered maximum damage when hurricane Beryl passed through the area. To support them in their everyday work the Government of Grenada ordered four new cars for the station.
Hurricane Beryl first passed as a Category 4 hurricane Carriacou Island in the early morning hours of July 1, 2024. It is a Category 4 hurricane, the most powerful hurricane that hit the Atlantic Ocean in June, destroying the island . It has damaged and Destroyed homes, police stations, schools, hospitals, and dilapidated roads. It all creates a terrible picture.
The island remains in a state of emergency. The government has restored few the remote areas, which expected to take several weeks. The impact of the cyclone was so severe that entire villages were wiped out.
As a result, many communities are still living in shelters or staying with relatives. A total of 857 residential buildings were detected in the Copernican satellite images. All were damaged in one way or another. About a 32 percent were completely destroyed. Almost one third (32 percent) are fully destroyed, one quarter are damaged, and the remaining 43 per cent are possibly damaged.
School faculties will reopen on these islands on 30th September 2024. Minister of Education David Andrew said this in a media interview on Tuesday. He stated that the faculties might be reopening but with some level of changes, modifications, and even differences depending at the quantity of upkeep ongoing at the various colleges. There are two secondary schools, six primary schools, and seven pre-primary schools on the sister isles of Grenada.
Dover Government and Mount Pleasant are some that were seriously damaged by Hurricane Beryl in July and and will use the provided tents. UNICEF provided tents for the residents of disaster. At nearby Wynwood Preschool, Dover Government students have been comforted by parents who have pitched tents (with portable bathroom facilities) on school grounds.
